Lake Garda Blog, Italy

18.05.2010 -Spring has most definitely sprung on Lake Garda in Italy! With temperatures rising into the mid to late 20's Sally and I are looking forward to flying out to Italy tomorrow night from Bristol (volcanic ash permitting!) - to sign the deeds on our new property and enjoy a few days of great weather and food, escaping what has been a cold May in the UK! Colours at this time of year on Lake Garda are always superb -before the summer heat haze gathers momentum on the lake- and this year like the last few there is bound to still be snow on Montebaldo, overlooking Malcesine.
I think we will be popping into Cantina della Valtenesi for a few glasses of Chiaretto, Lake Garda's and Moniga's superb rose wine (but did you know that it is produced with 4 red grapes, no white ones..) and to have a good old natter with our friends there, Stefano and Sante...

Updates to follow soon from Lake Garda itself!! Keep posted....

24.05.2010 - Summer has definitely arrived on Lake Garda, Italy - 27 degrees and blue skies...fields full of lovely excellent Lake Garda delicacy at this time of year is grilled lake sardines laced with Moniga's own Italian olive oil...oh well it's back to the sandwiches at my desk in the UK tomorrow!

17.06.2010 - The UK still has a cold chill in its air, but not to worry - we are all off to Lake Garda in Italy next weekend to celebrate Sally's 40th birthday! We'll be staying with a group of friends in our Lake Garda apartment, Villa Moniga - who are all very excited. Aside from sipping a lovely Chiaretto around the pool, we will visit superb Lake Garda resorts such as Desenzano, Salo and plan a big get together with all our Italian friends from Lake Garda on the Saturday night! Sunday I'm sure will be fairly chilled out but in the evening we have planned aperitifs on the lake terrace of the imposing Grand Hotel in Gardone Riviera (where Winston Churchill used to stay, aptly named Winnie's bar!) followed by a fab meal at the lovely trattoria Il Riolet above Lake Garda in the small village known as Fasano. Monday looks like a day out on the water slides at Acqua Paradise, part of Caneva World - lots of thrills and spills.....I will report back!

01.07.2010 - Recovering from a fab weekend in Moniga on Lake Garda, with a big party Saturday night - plenty of Chiaretto! Weather in Italy was gorgeous and it was idyllic just to relax around the pool and terrace....Sunday saw a wonderful trip out on Mauro's speedboat on Lake Garda with a refreshing aperitif at the Splendid Mayer in Desenzano ('Aperol Splitz', otherwise known as 'Pirlo'). Prosecco's at the Grand (picture below) followed by 'tortelli con la zucca' (pumpkin ravioli) and rare steak - the order of the day at the Riolet that night......thrills and spills on the slides, especially the Twin Peaks, at Caneva, Lake Garda on Monday! Still getting over the bruises...self inflicted I know!!

17.12.2010 - Montebaldo and the surrounding mountains are snow covered at this lovely time of year....both Desenzano and Salo boast beautiful Christmas lights and have a superb atmosphere - in fact Christmas on Lake Garda is a well kept secret. Most days boast clear and sunny weather with some of the brightest and most vibrant colours of the year - no wonder so many artists came to live on Lake Garda! New Year's Eve on Lake Garda has also become a bit of an event - with Desenzano topping the bill - vibrant, music, champagne (the best Italian spumante comes from nearby Franciacorta), in fact who needs Paris or London?! We'll be off to our favourite trattoria to sample the tortelli con la zucca and super charcoal grilled meats, all washed down with a bottle of amarone! Buon natale a tutti!

Picking poppies May 010 Lake Garda, Italy

May 2011 - been a while now since I updated this blog! Although we are in the UK enjoying the weather here Lake Garda has been incredibly hot in May with temperatures sometimes reaching 30 degrees!

Just two weeks and we jet off with the family for the half term week to stay in our villa in sunny Moniga, grandparents and all! Lee and Jemma are looking forward to their first visit to the fab Lake Garda water park - AcquaParadise, which is part of the CanevaWorld complex near Bardolino and Lasize. I wonder who will be the first down the 'Stuka' slide probably the steepest in Italy?!

Before this at the end of next week I am jetting off with some of the Albatross Travel Group's sales team to take them round Lake Garda on an educational trip, visting most of the Lake Garda hotels they sell and tasting some delicious Lake Garda wines and cuisine along the way! It's always a pleasure to show off this beautiful region to other people........

June 2011 - well well what a fun time we had at CanevaWorld, Acquaparadise on Lake Garda. It has to be as good as any water park in Europe with thrills and spills everywhere....the kids and I managed to fling ourselves off the 'Stuka' - a 32 metre vertical drop, but with great views of Lake Garda! Mum managed to join us on 'Twin peaks', again a great fun slide...

After a weeks eating hand made pasta - bigoli at Madonna della Scoperta, just up the road from the 1860's battles in this area around Solferino (the Red Cross was created then) - and luscious pizzas at Antica Corte in Moniga it was time to go back to the UK....:(
At least I managed to side step the shopping in Desenzano :) Unfortunately the weekend we left was the start of 'Moniga in Rosa' - an internationally acclaimed wine festival celebrating rose wine and Moniga's own Chiaretto...oh well maybe next year.....
